THE ELITE REAR RIFLE SIGHT

This is a precision Swiss made sight also marketed by Gehmann
as the G594. It represents
the
most advanced sighting system on the market today and is being used by more and
more
of our top international winners. It offers a number of clear advantages over
the standard rear
sight;
1. The down-range wind flags can be observed right through the rear sight which allows the shooter to see critical wind changes immediately when they take place and without moving his face on the cheekpiece. He can do this in the final stages of shot let-off. This is possible because there is an area of clear glass surrounding the actual sighting aperature. It looks something like the front plastic sight insert.
2. The "floating" rear aperature allows more light to enter the aiming eye which it normally does not have with conventional sights. This makes it easier to balance equal light entering the left and right eyes. It is important that equal light enters both eyes while aiming. If desired the blinder on the non-aiming eye can be larger because we no longer have to look around it in order to see windflags. This "halo" of light surrounding the aperature has been shown to be more comfortable to the eye than the usual bright pinhole of light in a black surround.
3. The area around the outside of the aperature can be brightened or darkened by means of a built in adjustable polarizing filter. Incoming light intensity in this area can be controlled from 10% to 90% light absorbtion by use of the polarizer. The actual aperature hole is not polarized and there is no glass in this hole at all , the sighting line is therefore unobstructed.
4. The shooter actually looks through a "tube" rather than the flat disc that we have in the usual rear sight. This tubular aperature will give a dramatic oval appearance if the shooter’s eye is not exactly in the same position from shot to shot. The shooter’s eye must be precisely centered on the aperature every time otherwise the opening will appear abnormally oblong or egg-shaped…..a clear warning to the shooter that his head is not aligned on the cheekpiece with the sight [a disasterous condition which can go un-noticed with a conventional sight]. The Elite will not allow you to mis-align your head position on the stock.
5. The Elite will fit onto all standard European dovetails and it will therefore be suitable for all modern rifles. The standard Anschutz, Steyr or Walther rubber eyecups will fit as will all other Gehmann accessories.
6. The very large windage and elevation knobs have a very soft but positive click…..easy to feel every click applied. The numerical scales on the sight have large white numbers…..easy to see without glasses or magnifier. By loosening a setscrew the windage and elevation scales can be "zeroed" at any spot. The sight body is strong enough to be used on centerfire rifles as well as smallbore.
While the price of the sight is very high [about $380.00 Canadian or US$245.00], It must be remembered that it includes a built-in adjustable iris and polarizer. These two items purchased separately would amount to more than a hundred dollars. The net cost of the system is therefore no more than a factory sight with the add-ons. The Elite is not easy to use right off the bat, it takes some getting used to. On the other hand it will definitely get you points, especially if you are master class already. The advantages that this sight offers are real ones…..it offers advantages that none other does. It is definitely state of the art.
